Safety Cleanliness Freedom Women’s Day Survey. What?

leave a comment »

Times of India , in collaboration with IMRB had conducted  Survey on Women on the occasion of the Women’s Day and had published the results with its comments.

This survey is reported to have been done in Six Cities of India.

Let’s assume the Survey is scientific ,which I doubt ,because of the sample size area and interpretation.

1.64% of Women feel Unsafe in the City.

2.60 % of Women step out side with company.

When one looks at the figures, it is evident one feels safe if they go out with company

.Only 4% are do not seem to subscribe to this view.

(One never knows whether both the responses are from the same person).

So if you feel safe with company why not opt for it  in the interest of your safety.

Complaint about Public Places.

45% say Toilets must be clean.

This applies to men as well.

Cleanliness is not Gender Specific unless if people are not clean.

Struggle For Independence.

Home Makers and Unemployed  29% want Independence.

Under sub clause in the same finding, 42% work for Financial Independence: 12% for Money

So it is all a question of being not committed for the family- “I would like to be independent of every one’-

Translate into common parlance ‘I am not sure of the relationship  and I want to be independent’

If the spouse also thinks the same way, then Marriage  and Family go out of the window.

Who takes the decision  on Big Investments?

39% say Husband.

Wait till you hear this data under the heading.

Who decides on Savings?

Woman decide.

40%

Who decides on method of  Contraception?

Women 21%

You decide on savings, contraception and yet say Husband decides on Big Investments.

It is like a man saying ‘I take all major decisions like obeying wife  while she does all unimportant things like finance; raising kids!

Either the Survey is skewed, or did not ask the relevant questions ….

Or Women being Women?

What is Women’s Day ,r Mother’s Day, father’s Day?

As if they no longer remain one on the other days!

Times of India and IMRB Survey Report.

Women's Freedom.

Women’s Freedom.

Bangalore is safe, but not safe enough. At least, that seems to be what the majority of women living in the city believe, based on a study commissioned by The Times of India. The study, which is based on a survey of 900 women conducted by IMRB in six cities across the country, looked at various issues faced by women, beginning with safety, services available, gender issues at home and the workplace, health and financial issues. It shows that while women feel relatively safer in Bangalore compared to other cities, in absolute terms, opinions are divided. An overwhelming 64% of the city’s women said they do not feel safe in the city after sunset, and only 17% said they felt safe “at any time of the day.”

Some parts of the city are perceived to be less safe than others. TheMarathahalli Ring Road area, for instance, is perceived to be either “unsafe for women” or “very unsafe for women” by more than a third of those surveyed. “The stretch of Outer Ring Road between Marathahalli and Bellandur, where I live, is definitely underlit and possibly unsafe. The few times I’ve had to wait alone at Marathahalli junction for a bus or auto haven’t been pleasant,” says Ankita Sharma, who works in an HR firm in Brookefield and travels by public transport. Sharma says there are no street lights in this area and the operators of private vehicles soliciting passengers can get rude and hostile. “After the Delhi rape incident, I became especially wary of these private vehicles. I don’t know if any of them have proper licenses and whether the police keeps an eye on them,” she adds.

Other areas where women felt “unsafe” or “very unsafe” included Kengeri Road and the stretch between BEL Road and Vidyaranyapura. Even the morning stroll, so long a part of the Bangalorean’s day, seems to have become fraught. More than half the women (53%) IMRB spoke to felt unsafe during their morning walks. An increasing number of women feel so insecure that they have begun contemplating carrying a weapon – 42% of the respondents said that they “felt the need to carry a weapon/article of self-defence”

I can ad my comments on other statistics.

Can some one tell me what Freedom is being referred to here?

Rapes Drinking Media

leave a comment »

I had posted recently  two articles on the Reasons for Rape.

A rape Poster.

A rape Poster.

One post dealt with the publicity seekers and the media coverage which seemed to have only the TRP in its mind.

And the issue of punishing the accused in th recent Delhi Gang Rape descended  into a free for all for men Bashing and demand for more Freedom for women  to dress and  move about.

In the din some issues  have been left out.

One such dangerous influence is Drinking,.

Rape Statistics US.

Figure 1. Of the 12.1 million American women who have been raped, nearly 30% were assaulted when they were younger than 11 years old. Another 32% were raped between the ages of 11 and 17; 22% were raped between the ages of 18 and 24; 10% were between the ages of 25 and 28. 6% of rapes occurred in women over the age of 29.

Alcohol use by the victim or the perpetrator is frequently associated with acquaintance rape.

  • In one, study 26% of men who acknowledged committing sexual assault admitted that they were intoxicated at the time of the assault, and an additional 29% reported being mildly buzzed—55% were under the influence of alcohol.
  • In the same study 21% of the college women who experienced sexual aggression on a date were intoxicated at the time of the assault, and an additional 32% reported being mildly buzzed—53% were under the influence of alcohol.
  • More than once a minute, 78 times an hour, 1,871 times a day, girls and women in America are raped.

Sexual assault has nothing to do with passion; it uses power and control to dominate and humiliate victims.

  • 50% of rapists are between the ages of 15 and 24 years old (see Figure 1).
  • Studies consistently conclude that 75% of all assaults are planned.  When three or more assailants are involved, the number climbs to 90%.
  • 78% of rape victims know their attackers.

The average annual rate of rape and sexual assault among American Indians is 3.5 times higher than for all races.

  • American Indian victims of violence are the most likely of all races of victims to indicate that the offender committed the offense while drinking.
Race of victim Percent of victims of violence reporting offender drinking (average annual percentage 1992-1996)
American Indian 46%
Black 28%
White 36%
Asian 22%

.

  • Victims of rape and sexual assault often don’t report the crime to the police and often do not report it to anyone.
  • According to Bureau of Justice Statistics, over 70 % of sexual assaults are not reported. For Native women reporting can be really difficult because of the high level of mistrust for white agencies and helpers.  Other reasons Native women do not report sexual assault is the fear of being ostracized by their families, as well as the complicated jurisdictional issues on reservations.
  • The National Violence Against women survey indicated a 15.9 percent victimization rate of American Indian/Alaska Natives by an intimate partner—significantly higher than for women of other races.
  • Of the 854 American Indians convicted in federal court in fiscal year 1997, 20 % were convicted for rape.”

Now if we look at the coverage of Media on the recent gang rape , how many of them focused on the issue of punishing th guilty?

They concentrated more who said what on the ‘Rape’

The jokers who came on the Television channels were interested in cheap publicity and said things more for shock value so that they may be noticed.

Even those who had the interests of women were crude to the point of calling women names, instead of asking them to be careful.

This type of coverage is not new.

Media, including print Media sensationalizes any thing that is perverted.

Look at the coverage they extend to father/uncles raping a child, women/murdering their husbands with the help of their paramour,

revealing /nude photographs under the garb of social reporting and Fashion.

Look at our own Times of India, whose TimesNow cried Foul the most in the recent gang Rape, publishing a Page In Your City showing faceless people showing off cleavage, writing about drinking parties.!

Now to Investigative reporting.

In the name of revealing the inner world of Tees the SUn publishes the Diary of Two Teens.

Found out that on Friday Hetty got three love bites, two from Luke and one from Jake.

May 17, 1993: Went to athletics. Tom is such a b*****d. He took my trainers so I took one of his and Katy took the other.

Then Jake threw one over the fence!

He took my hair ruffle and went to get his trainers so me and Katy followed him into the boys’ changing rooms and he attacked me with his Lynx (deodorant)

It went all in my hair so Katy tipped his pencil case out and we kicked it around and then I got my ruffle back.

July 1, 1993: Teacher found out about Katy going to an all-night party.

She thinks she is sleeping with a boy in the year above us and she has to tell her mum. I hope she is OK.

July 2, 1993: Katy told her mum and she didn’t mind.

I was surprised but I wish my mum was like that.”

Reasons for Rape in India

with 3 comments

Now that Nirbhaya,  the  girl who was gang raped in New Delhi has died, people are waking up to the reality of Rapes in India.

The Western newspapers are awash with articles on the subject.

Victim of Delhi gang rape.

Nirbhaya, Victim of Delhi gang rape.

I found a reasonable good one which analyses the issue of rape.

That is from The Washington Post.

Following are the reasons  cited.

Fewer Female Police Personnel.

True

Even the quality of women Police available is  disheartening.

I have found the women Police to be more heartless than a Policeman in terms of character and humane approach to family issues brought into Police Stations.

These women Police ensure that they get a good bribe to settle the issue even if what is agreed upon is totally unjustifiable.

Lockup rapes are most common.

Recruiting good material for the workforce will be the right step.

And the training of Police force, both Men and women must be scientific and they must be made people friendly.

Police Force.

‘Delhi, for example, is home to one of the largest metropolitan police forces in the world with some 84,000 officers. But only one-third are involved in any kind of actual “policing” at any given time, while the rest provide protection services to various politicians, senior bureaucrats, diplomats and other elites. According to the Times of India there is one officer for every 200 citizens and about 20 officers for every VIP. Many of those who do perform police duties can be found shaking down motorists, participating in protection rackets and simply looking the other way as crimes take place.’

Yes, the strength of The Police Force must be increased

Useless and avoidable deployment of Police Force for the Security of Politicians must  be dispensed with(most of the politicians deserve to be a security risk and I wish they succumb to the threat!)

Blaming Provocative Clothing.

There’s a tendency to assume the victims of sexual violence somehow brought it on themselves. In a 1996 survey of judges in India, 68 percent of the respondents said that provocative clothing is an invitation to rape. In response to the recent gang-rape incident, a legislator in Rajasthan suggested banning skirts as a uniform for girls in private schools, citing it as the reason for increased cases of sexual harassment.

I disagree with this point  in that while Rape is not the direct outcome of provocative clothing, one can not deny that provocative clothing provokes.

Even the term ‘provoke’ is used by the author to indicate the rekindling and egging of the desire!

Women, for their safety, must ensure they  do not wear dresses that expose their body.

One never knows how many perverts are up there, who imagine bedding every thing in sight!

Asking women to be careful is not a denial of their rights.

Acceptance of Domestic Violence.

True.

This is to be addressed by the families of the men and women.

Here I mean the domestic violence by women as well.

Lack of Public Safety.

True with the rider that one can not  roam about bars frequented by the flotsam and jetsam of the society.

The attempt to compromise the rape issue outside the Court also encourages the incidence of rape.

The point to be observed is that while people who talk highly fo liberation of women and self-professed Liberals, How Many of them are prepared to take a girl who was raped as one’s daughter  in-law or men who will marry such a girl?

This will take some time.

As things stand, the  Court hearing can be held in camera , to begin with.

Sluggish court system, Low Convictions and the low status of women.

Agreed.

The points missed out.

The Lifestyle of Drinking, late night Partying , adoption of Western values, loss of family values, Single parenting do have a major role to play.

I will be posting Blog on The law of Rape in India and the need for Reform.

This includes a proper definition of Rape.

In the frenzy of punishing rapists, one should not take a woman’s word at its face value at every instance.

Karunanidhi’s TESO Communique,No Tamil Elam,No Agenda For Tamils

with 4 comments

DMk Chief Karunandhi is organising a meet of Tamil Elam Supporters  Organisation ( TESO) on 12 July ,2012, in Chennai.

What Karunanidhi will not discuss in the Meet are:

Tamil Elam.

Genocide and bringing to Book Rajapakshe and his thugs.

Honourable Political settlement for the Tamils.

Resettlement of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Mechanism to ensure return the displaced Tamil Diaspora to Sri Lanka.

What he will discuss are;

Tamils are being killed and the Central Government has to take action.

The attack on Tamils must be stopped.

At the end of the meet the Communique will read as follows.

” The Tamils all over the world are shocked and distressed over the killing of the Tamils , especially children and women .

My heart bleeds and all the Tamils are aware of what I have been doing for the cause of the Tamils in Sri Lanka since I was three years old.

In fact I would have gone to Sri Lanka at that age to fight along with my brethren .

But Thanthai Periyar and Perarignar Anna  begged me not to do so as I could effectively wage a war against the Sri Lankan Government by getting my son, daughter and nephew inducted in the Central Cabinet.

Entire Tamil diaspora knows how I  went on an indefinite fast lasting for three hours between Break fast and Lunch to stop the massacre of the Tamils!

All of you know how our party’s Ministers at Delhi argued for the cause of the Tamils by remaining Silent in Cabinet Meets.

In fact my daughter Kanimozhi went to Sri Lanka wand struck a working relationship with Rajapakshe and posed for photographs with the gift received from him.

I shall continue to fight for the cause of the Tamils and I will sacrifice my Life in this endeavour as I have done so many times in the past.”

Story:

A day after Union home minister P Chidambaram met him, DMK chief MKarunanidhi on Monday said the demand for Eelam (a separate Tamil land in Sri Lanka) will not be part of the agenda at the conference of the recently revived Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) in Chennai on August 12.

“It’s different to have an opinion on a separate Eelam, but we don’t intend to put it up as a topic for discussion at the conference and create any confusion,” Karunanidhi told reporters. He said the conference was called to discuss various solutions to the problems faced by Tamils in the island nation and ensure a livelihood for them. The Times of India reported on Monday that the home minister conveyed to Karunanidhi the UPA government’s displeasure over the Eelam demand being included in the conference.

Dismissing the report that the Eelam issue figured in discussions with Chidambaram during their brief interaction on Sunday, Karunanidhi said, “Chidambaram met me because he was in Chennai. We did not discuss politics at all.” He sought to justify his move saying, “It is only democratic that we consult with other leaders on what they feel about a separate Eelam. We don’t intend to have any protests demanding it. As of now, the priority is to ensure safety and good living for Sri Lankan Tamils.”
