Orangutan Fishes With A Spear

We call ourselves the most evolved of the Species with an ability to do things and can handle tools.

But an Orangutan is found fishing with a Spear after watching local Fishermen!

Story:

Tool use among orangutans was first documented by Carel van Schaik. In 1994, Carel observed orangutans developing tools to help themselves eat, while conducting field work in Gunung Leuser National Park, in the northwest Sumatra.

Specifically the orangutans were using sticks to pry open pulpy fruits that have “Plexiglas needles” capable of delivering a painful jab covering them. Using the tools, the orangutans were getting past handling the prickly husk and into the nutritious fruit. From an anthropological viewpoint, tool use represents an aspect of culture, since the entire group participates in a behavior that has developed over time. One unique thing to clarify is that only Sumatran orangutans have been observed to use tools, not orangutans from Borneo

Recently, Gerd Schuster co-author of Thinkers of the Jungle: The Orangutan Report, took this photograph of,

“a male orangutan, clinging precariously to overhanging branches, flails the water with a pole, trying desperately to spear a passing fish…

The extraordinary image, a world exclusive, was taken in Borneo on the island of Kaja…

This individual had seen locals fishing with spears on the Gohong River.

Although the method required too much skill for him to master, he was later able to improvise by using the pole to catch fish already trapped in the locals’ fishing lines.”

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) says that the first waves of tsunami were expected to hit Sumatra at 4:21 p.m. in Simeuleu, Aceh, and at 4:31 p.m. in Banda Aceh.
PTWC has issued a tsunami warning to several countries in the Indian Ocean region after an earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale jolted Aceh on Wednesday.
“The earthquake might potentially trigger a tsunami that could damage the area along the Indian Ocean shore,” PTWC said as quoted by kompas.com.
Countries which have been warned about the tsunami include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, Maldives, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Reunion, Seychelles, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Madagascar, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Comores, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Mozambique, Kenya, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, South Africa and Singapore. Despite initial fears,it is now expected that the Tsunami may not hit India.

India today said there was no likelihood of tsunami tidal waves being formed anywhere in the Indian Ocean region after an earthquake of 8.9 magnitude hit waters off western coast of northern Sumatra in Indonesia.

Intially, the Earth Sciences Ministry and the National Disaster Management Authority issued a tsuanmi warning for Andaman and Nicobar Island and an alert to coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Later, in subsequent bulletions, the two organisations virtually ruled out tsunami in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and elsewhere in the country.
“There is no specific threat. It was a watch and alert. There is no likelihood of any tsunami in the Indian Ocean region,” NDMA Vice President Sashidhar Reddy told PTI.

He said the earthquake that struck the Sumatra islands was not the kind of tremors that usually triggers tsunami tidal waves.

“It is the kind of strike and slip earth quake which does not trigger tsunami. There was no vertical displacement of water under the sea,” he said.

“Tsunami possibility is virtually ruled out,” he said, adding that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration and the Army stationed there had informed the NDMA that so far no waves have been noticed in the island.”

Sumatra Earthquake

http://blogsofwar.com/threatstream/index_sumatra_earthquake.html

News coverage by Huffington Post is extensive.

An underwater magnitude 8.7 earthquake has struck in the Indian ocean off the coast of Indonesia prompting a tsunami warning.

Aftershocks reported after the first quake were reportedly even stronger than the initial quake, said the Reuters news agency, and prompted fresh tsunami alerts across the region.

Seismologists from the US Geological Survey (USGS) said the first earthquake hit near Aceh province on the island of Sumatra.

IN PICTURES: Indonesia Reacts To Tsunami Warning

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said a tsunami had been generated, but its strength was not yet known. Reuters quoted one official who said the height of the tsunami was around 17cm.

“Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

A later warning said that it could be several hours before the threat could be assumed to have passed.

People in Aceh province and the east coast of India rushed to higher ground.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the country would “remain vigilant”.

“Our warning system is working well,” he said. “I have ordered the national relief team to fly immediately to Aceh to ensure the situation is under control.”

Prime Minister David Cameron is currently in Indonesia on a tour of Asia.

At a press conference where he announced a deal to sell Airbus aircraft to Indonesia, Cameron said that Britain would be ready to help the country “at this time of worry”:

The BBC said that in Jakarta buildings shook for up to five minutes during the quake.

The tremors were said to have been felt as far afield as the eastern Indian coast and Thailand.

The quake was located 33km under the sea, the USGS said. Its epicentre was about 495km from Banda Aceh, the captial of Aceh province.
