“Dogs Are Buddhists

I am always surprised at people talking a lot about Parenting.

I recall an instance when a leading school invited me for a Seminar as Faculty on Parenting organised for Schools and Parents in Chennai, around 2009.

Knowing my views and quirkiness in addressing a meet , I politely declined.

The Correspondent of the Institution where I was  Management Consultant insisted I attend and confirmed me as a participant.

Being a good friend of the Correspondent I attended.

There was a lot of talk and discussions on parenting.

Dog as a Buddhist

Dog as a Buddhist

When my turn came , I spoke thus,

‘Ladies and Gentlemen,

All of you are assembled here to listen to a talk on Parenting.

Animals, and even lowly Life, beget children and they bring their children up.

They do not attend a seminar.

That’s my talk.

Thank you”

I am always surprised at people trying to study parenting!

They leave children to baby sitters and attend seminars on parenting!

Now the story beats even this.

Digs are replacing children in Hong Kong and Singapore. And worse dogs are being declared as Buddhists.

Read On:

In Hong Kong and Singapore, it is not unusual to see couples pushing baby strollers that do not contain a baby, but rather a small dog. Sometimes the puppy prams are not wheeled by the dog owners, but by a Filipino or Indonesian domestic helper who has been hired just to look after the pooch.

This extreme level of anthropomorphic dog pampering  is taking place, not surprisingly, in two cities where sky-high high real estate prices and poor parental benefits force many adults to forego what is increasingly viewed as the luxury of having children. The combination of low fertility and the worryingly high prices of homes large enough to raise actual kids —this modest 776 square foot 3-bed in a Hong Kong suburb popular with middle class families rents at $3864 a month—produces some eye-catching luxury businesses catering to canines.

In Singapore, pet owners can buy sailboat cruises and aromatherapy sessions for their companions, the Daily Telegraph reports. Hong Kong has a luxury dog hotel for animals whose owners—sorry, “parents”— cannot bear the thought of leaving them in a mere kennel. Allegedly designed in consultation with an animal psychologist, it has a beauty spa and a shop selling products with names such as “Ultrasonic Hydro Bath”. (Here is a photo gallery of its primped and coiffed guests.)

And let us not forget about the dogs’ religious and spiritual needs. At a recent pet products exhibition in Hong Kong, guests could have their animals proclaimed as Buddhists in what is known as a “gui yi” (皈依) ceremony. And in 2011, a South African yoga instructor in Hong Kong offered “dog yoga”; in Singapore they call it “doga.”

Singapore’s leaders would much rather have people fulfill their need to nurture by having more babies; the city state is facing a dangerous demographic time-bomb with a fertility rate of 1.2 births per woman. In Hong Kong, the figure is only 1.1.

One main reason: Real estate. Property prices have soared in both cities due to low global interest rates, open economies and high interest from wealthy mainland Chinese buyers. Hong Kong flats are nicknamed “shoebox homes“. And while Singapore offers its poorest citizens fantastic public housing, the government is also fighting a property bubble (paywall) that has put home ownership beyond the reach of much of the middle class. Hong Kong and Singapore policymakers also don’t do much to encourage parenthood by providing generous maternity or paternity leave, like France and Sweden.

US Marines Drink Snake Blood Photos Video

13,000 soldiers from seven countries (Thailand, United States, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia) are participating in Cobra Gold 2013, a joint, multi-national military training exercise. Cobra Gold focuses on maintaining and improving military-to-military relationships among nations sharing common goals and security commitments in the Asia-Pacific region. Hosted annually by Thailand since 1982, Cobra Gold is the largest joint military exercise in Asia.

U.S. and Thai soldiers swapped skills on how to survive in a tropical forest at a Thai Navy base 90 miles or 145 kilometers east of Bangkok on Wednesday. Thai soldiers showed U.S. Marines how to catch a cobra with their bare hands and how to find water in the jungle as well as drinking snake blood to survive.

Father Speaks:.

Father of Delhi gang rape Victim.

Heartbreak: Badri Singh, father of the woman who was gang-raped and murdered in India, has said that he had been hopeful that his daughter would make a full recovery from her horrific injuries

‘Speaking to ITV1′s Daybreak, Mr Singh said: ’When we went to Singapore she was not conscious but she had tears in her eyes. Then I realised she was in a really bad state.

‘I couldn’t think what to do at that time, I was like a bird without wings, I was neither here nor there.

‘So when I thought she might get better, I used to get filled with some hope. When I was told that she might not get well and might have to have an operation I felt uncomfortable.

‘It was difficult for me, but when she was put on a ventilator it gave me some hope that she would get better. I thought she might get better and she would live.’

Mr Singh said that his daughter’s death 13 days after the horrific attack has ‘brought an awakening’ to Indian society and called for his country to no longer turn a blind eye to attacks on women.

He added that he would like to see a new law or a hospital named after his daughter.

Describing his daughter, Mr Singh said: ‘When she was born my aunties and uncles always used to carry her around, those were really lovely days.

‘Right from the start her ambition was to be a doctor. Her main aim was that our family wouldn’t have to suffer any more, she wanted to put the difficult life behind us, wipe out our poverty.

‘She also wanted to make sure I didn’t have to keep working hard late in life.’

Scroll down for Video Link.

………Mr Sharma said that he would contest Indian police‘s handling of evidence after prosecutors claimed to have forensic evidence which links the men to the attack.

A 17-year-old who is also accused of the woman’s rape and murder will appear at a youth court separately.

Meanwhile, the victim’s companion on the night of the attack, 28-year-old software engineer Awindra Pandey, has spoken out about the terrible ordeal and his friend’s horrific injuries.

He told The Times that his efforts to flag down help from passing motorists after the pair had been dumped in the road were ignored for 20 minutes.

Mr Pandey said that police were reluctant to help his friend despite her injuries.

‘She was asking for water and complaining of pain in her stomach,’ he said.

‘She was bleeding heavily. They (the police) asked me to put her in the van.’

He said that the pair, who were not dating, had been to a cinema in the city to see Life of Pi but were unable to persuade a rickshaw driver to take them all the way back to the Dwarka suburb where the woman lived with her parents.

They were dropped halfway home, when a phone call from her mother asking her to hurry home prompted them to board an illegal bus with blacked out windows.

Mr Pandey confronted other passengers when they began insulting the pair but they soon produced iron rods, he said.

He said that he was beaten and fell to the floor of the bus.

First hand account of the incident.

Delhi Gang Rape Disturbing Facts Images Media Coverage

Now that Nirbhaya, who was gang raped and died subsequently. it is time to reflect on some disturbing facts.

New York Times and The Washington Post , have in addition to news coverage, have blogs on the incident as well.

NYT has at least 10  News articles showing up in Google search on the subject.”

In addition analysis like  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/30/world/asia/weak-response-of-india-government-in-rape-case-stokes-rage.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss”>Leaders’ Response Magnifies Outrage in India Rape Case

The Washington Post has a very detailed Blog and has about  5 in the Google first page result.

This is apart from a very wide coverage of the rape.

These are ,apart from the coverage of the Agitation,Treatment at Singapore, and death.

There were also  excessive coverage  over the remarks of Abhijit Mukeherji, and some other leaders on the agitation on television channels in India.

The coverage, in my view, by the Foreign Media, is surprising for the incident as the coverage, there has been in similar previous cases.

But such an ind depth coverage and to the extent of spending too much space ont he issue, while they had many other top stories to cover?

The coverage by the UK is equally exhaustive.

Look at some of the images from the Mail UK.

I am reproducing one here.

“A protester with hands coloured in fake blood holds a candle during a protest campaign by Youth Congress against the gang rape of the student.

A protester ,on such a solemn occasion, spends time to have artificial blood applied to her hands and look at her face-clear question of posing!

Some images which show the agitators indulging in violence, seem to be well organised.

Some thing is not right.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2254504/Indian-gang-rape-victim-dies-Singapore-hospital.html

The target of the protesters’ anger seems to be India’s archaic sexual violence laws and a culture of impunity for offenders, with even authorities demonstrating a blase attitude toward rape. In the wake of the Dec. 16 incident, officials have been criticized for belittling rape victims, and the son of India’s president apologized after calling the protesters “highly dented and painted” women, who go “from discos to demonstrations,” the AP reported.

Protesters have called for far worse fates for India’s rapists than online exposure — including execution and chemical castration. Some argue that the public database is far from an effective remedy for the epidemic of violence. Writing in First Post,  says the idea seems like the move of a government grasping for a quick fix to appease popular fury:

It’s always worrisome when policies are cooked up in an overheated chamber of  righteous popular outrage. This proposed database seems prompted less by a concern for public safety than a belated attempt by a flatfooted government to give the appearance of swift action. If we cannot hang them in the public square, let’s hang them in a public database at least.

If groups of people are capable of gang-raping innocent women, he argues, they might be just as likely to target even suspect rapists for vigilante justice, as they already have following the gang-rape incident:

Soon after the Delhi gangrape, five men in a Jharkhand village,  all “suspected eve teasers” were beaten to death by an angry mob.
