How Six Corporations Control Media in US

In Democracy information is Power.

Those who control Media control the shape the Democracy and the Government.

Read my blog on http://ramanan50.wordpress.com/2011/01/01/media-ownership-details-india/

Now look at US Media Holding. For a larger and detailed Picture click on the image.

This infographic created by Jason at Frugal Dad shows that almost all media comes from the same six sources.

That’s consolidated from 50 companies back in 1983.

NOTE: This infographic is from last year and is missing some key transactions. GE does not own NBC (or Comcast or any media) anymore. So that 6th company is now Comcast. And Time Warner doesn’t own AOL, so Huffington Post isn’t affiliated with them.

But the fact that a few companies own everything demonstrates “the illusion of choice,” Frugal Dad says. While some big sites, like Digg and Reddit aren’t owned by any of the corporations, Time Warner owns news sites read by millions of Americans every year.

Olympics US Player Exposes Spanish Breast, Video

It may have arguably been the first time in this summer’s Olympics a tape delay would have been useful.

On Wednesday NBC’s underwater camera captured a women’s water polo player briefly exposing another player’s breast to shocked reaction from viewers watching live at home.

‘You see a lot of suit grabbing going on underwater,’ an NBC sports broadcaster said after the control room cut to the live underwater swimsuit fight between Spain and the U.S.

In the mere seconds’ long attack, the Spanish swimmer is seen thrashing to unlock the American swimmer’s grip from her suit that temporarily exposes her breast before sending a quick blow to her attacker’s own chest earning her release.

‘That was Kamie Craig doing the grabbing but the Spaniard retaliated…’ the broadcaster updated viewers after its finish.

Olympics- Twtter Boots Journalist To Gag,Apologises

So much for Free Speech in Social Media.

Money Drives!

Story:

The first social media Olympics have become a minefield for the Olympic movement—and especially for Twitter Inc., which has trumpeted its tight connection to the London Games.

Heading into the global sporting event, the International Olympic Committee touted its social-media capabilities and struck partnerships with Twitter, Facebook Inc., FB -3.73%and Google Inc.’s GOOG -0.82% YouTube, among others. Twitter, meanwhile, also played up its partnership with Comcast Corp.’s CMCSA +0.91% NBCUniversal, which is broadcasting the Games.

But since the Games kicked off Friday, the Olympics have become a flash point for social media run amok.

The biggest brouhaha so far erupted on Monday and Tuesday, when a finger-pointing spat emerged over a journalist getting booted off Twitter after he was critical of NBC’s Olympics coverage. The journalist was reinstated on the short-messaging service Tuesday—but not before the blogosphere lit up with criticism over whether Twitter was curtailing free speech. Twitter apologized for what it said were its missteps in the incident.

Beyond that, two athletes have been kicked out of the Games for posting controversial statements on Twitter. At least one other athlete had been reprimanded for using social media to name their sponsors, in apparent violation of Olympics rules—and athletes have used Twitter to strike back, criticizing the IOC rules. British diver Tom Daley also warred on Twitter this week with a critic, who was later arrested on suspicion of malicious communication and revealed to be a British teenager.

At a London news conference Tuesday, IOC spokesman Mark Adams said the organization didn’t regret encouraging the use of social media during the Games—and probably couldn’t control social media if it tried.

Mother’s Unique Punishment For Posting in Facebook

Having found out that her daughter posted Alcohol related photographs in Facebook, a Mother devised a novel, yet effective way to punish her through the same Social Network.

“After author ReShonda Tate Billingsley found her daughter posting alcohol-related photos to the social network, she came up with a very original, and no doubt effective, form of punishment.

Following up the post her mother deemed inappropriate is a new photo that features the young girl holding a hand-written sign that reads, “Since I want to post photos of me holding liquor I am obviously not ready for social media and will be taking a hiatus until I learn what I should + should not post. BYE-BYE.”

Rough.

But Billingsley isn’t alone in her parenting style.

Denise Abbott, a mother from Ohio, used the same method to punish her 13-year-old daughter Ava after she found her posting “disrespectful things” on Facebook.

“I do not know how to keep my [mouth shut]. I am no longer allowed on Facebook or my phone. Please ask why,” the text on the 13-year-old girl’s Facebook photo read.

Despite the embarrassment, Abbot told NBC she doesn’t regret her disciplinary action, saying she needed to find something that would “totally impact her.”

“You have to adapt your parenting skills with the times,” Abbott told NBC.

It could be worse, though. At least Billingsley and Abbot didn’t put a bullet through their child’s laptop and post the video on Facebook.

Several huge corporations own major networks and newspapers in the U.S. How much of the content do they control?

Everyone seems to know that the hand that feeds is the hand in charge.

He who pays the piper gets to call the tune,” said Steve Rendall, a senior analyst at FAIR.

In the US, paying the piper and running the show are corporations. The tune they call, what Americans see, hear and read.

It’s a money maker, it’s a cash cow. People don’t think that there is any money in the media. Aside from health care these days, the media is the industry of the 21st century,” said Georgetown University Professor Chris Chambers.

Half a century ago, fifty corporations ran the major networks and newspapers. Since then, a rapid concentration of media ownership has resulted in a near media monopoly spearheaded by a lucky few.

The danger of this kind of media concentration is that it robs democracy of diversity, it robs viewers of being exposed to a wider range of views,” said media critic Danny Schechter.

Analysts say the U.S. is living in the golden age of media bias.

It’s never been easier to find out exactly who is behind what, and where the conflict of interests are,” said media analyst TJ Walker.

Topping the list of owners is Rupert Murdoch and his empire News Corp.

Murdoch stands over FOX News, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post – just to name a few.

General Electric, one of the largest military contractors in the US and Comcast, one of America’s largest cable providers are joined by the hip running NBC.

The floor of the Hudson river is covered in carcinogenic PSBs – these toxigenic dangerous chemicals, that were put there by General Electric. General Electric owns NBC. NBC has not taken any trouble to report on this massive environmental story,” said Rendall.

With the innocent face of Mickey Mouse as their trademark, Disney is the proud owner of ABC.

When ABC was bought by Disney and there were some ABC stories about improprieties at Disneyland and Disney World, and Disney killed those,” said Chambers.

CNN and Time magazine belong to Time Warner.

Joining the media giants is CBS Corporation towering over CBS News and Viacom – a global entertainment content company – running, among others, Comedy Central.
