MS Live Concert NamaRamayana UN Videos
Born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu on September 16, 1916, as Kunjamma, Subbulakshmi grew up surrounded by music. Initially, her mother Shanmugavadivu, a veena player, trained her.
Intrigued by gramophone records, Kunjamma would roll a piece of paper and sing into it for hours. She cut her first disc at the age of 10. The songs were maragatavadivu andOothukuzhiyinile in an impossibly high pitch.
From her formative years, MS worked hard to perfect her diction, understand the inner meaning of the composition and spent months memorising Sanskrit texts. Even in her seventies, she learnt new songs and recorded them.
“Music is an ocean and I am a student. For a vocalist, voice practice is important. It has been my habit to learn the meaning of songs I have to sing and the correct pronunciation of each word,” she once wrote in a magazine, when she was 73.
It was through the Columbia Gramophone Company records that she was first noticed in Chennai even before she was in her teens.
When she was 15 or 16, she was invited to sing at a wedding, where she sang for two hours while the audience sat mesmerised.
By 1932, she had become a sort of cult figure for a whole generation of youngsters. In 1932, her mother Shanmukhavadivu decided to shift to Chennai.
The move was a blessing in disguise, as MS got a break in films, acting in many successful ones, including the all-time Indian classic Meera.
In 1933, the year of the Mahamaham, a festival celebrated every 12 years in Kumbakonam, film director K Subramaniam organised a concert of MS in the town.
MS took the town by storm. It gave her a chance to give a concert at the Music Academy in Madras.
Magazines like Ananda Vikatan began reviewing her performances regularly and she was constantly referred to by the press as ‘Nightingale’.
It was at this time she met Thiyagaraja Sadasivam, a freedom fighter and fairly well-known figure in Chennai’s political scene as a protégé of the late C Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji. They fell in love and married in Thiruneermalai, near Madras, in 1940. From then on, her career took a new direction.
Subbulakshmi’s first movie Sevasadanam was released in 1938 in which she acted as a poor girl married to a rich old man. It was followed by Shakuntalai in which she played the lead, a glamorous role teaming her with G N Balasubramanian, the most attractive intellect of that time.

Listen to the way people in all walks of Life are mentioned in the Sankalpa.
“Historically it was two separate events. The first is Meenakshi festival that was celebrated on a different month and Alagar festival celebrated on a different month as two separate celebrations.
Meenakshi is the daughter of Pandya king Malayathuvaja Pandian and his queen Kanchanamalai, The royal couples didn’t have a child for a long time. So, he did special pujas and offered his prayers to the God. During the puja a small girl came out of the fire and sat on the lap of the king. At that time a divine voice from the sky told them that this child is avatar of Sakthi (Wife of Lord Shiva) and Lord Shiva will come to marry her at the right age. Meenakshi became a young women and was trained in all warfare and she was crowned as Queen of Pandya kingdom after her father. She conquered the whole world with her extraordinary war skill and at last she went to Kailayam (The Place of Lord Shiva) to conquer it. When Meenakshi meet Lord Shiva at the battlefield she fell in love with him and realised that She is an avatar of Sakthi, Lord Shiva’s wife).
Lord Shiva assured Meenakshi that he will come to Madurai to marry her. As promised Lord Shiva along with all the Devas and rishi’s came to Madurai to attend the holy wedding. Lord Shiva married Meenakshi and ruled the Pandya kingdom under the name Sundara Pandyan.
This is a Separate celebration that was celebrated by Saivaites (Followers of Lord Shiva). The below is the story of Alagar festival that is celebrated by Vaishnavite (Followers of Lord Vishnu)(wiki) http://browse.feedreader.com/c/Live_Trend-1/302640645

When God Rushes Across The River Chithirai Festival Madurai
Ever heard of God rushing across the River to provide Salvation?
Lord Vishnu Does.
Every year Lord Vishnu,Kallazhakar from Azahkar Koil, near Madurai,Tamil Nadu,India, on the Pradhamai(the next Day after Full Moon in the month of Chiththirai-April end) after adorning himself with the Garland prepared for him by Andal(Srivilliputhur, 48 Km from Madurai) who pined for him eventually married Him) rushes to Madurai from Azhagar Koil, visits Suthapas , a Rishi, who was cursed by Sage Dhurvasa for having failed to respect him.
Suthapas was born as a Frog(Mandukam) and was in penance in Madurai.
Dhurvasa had decreed that Suthapas shall obtain salvation by Lord Vishnu when He crosses the River Vedavathi,Vaigai now.
True to Dharma Lord Vishnu gets down the river on a horse and enters Madurai.
Being the elder brother of Goddess Uma, He is being accorded all the respects due to a brother by Goddess Uma,Meenakshiamman, Madurai.
Temple priests offer the Obeisance on behalf of Goddess Uma.
The festival coincides with Meenakshiamman Thirukkalyanam in Madurai.
Legend has it , as the elder brother of Uma, Lord Vishnu , gave Her away to Lord Siva, Chokkanathar(Godenhued) on this day.
Earlier the marriage was celebrated in Madurai in Maasi (about two months earlier)
King Tirumalai Naicker, to build unity among Saivite and Vaishnavas , merged these two festivals into one and had it celebrated in Chithirai.
Madurai will be brimming with Devotees from the day Lord Vishnu enters the River(அழகர் ஆற்றில் இறங்குதல் ).

Temple Accounts Are Submitted To God Daily Madurai
God is treated as the head of the Family in Hindu families.
They are called Kula Deivam’ in Tamil, literal meaning, head of Clan.
Any auspicious ceremony at Homes is preceded by a Pooja to this Deity, be it a naming ceremony of the child , marriage.
I will be posting separately on this subject.
If God is being treated as the Head of the family at Home , what about the Temples where hundreds come worship and share their joys and sorrows?
So all respect that is due to the Head is being accorded to God, as one would to an Elder of the Family.
As such in temples there was and still is habit of presenting the daily accounts of the Temple to the reigning deity.
But there are exceptions, depending on the Sthala Purana (details of the origin of the Place).
But in most of the Temples the Account Submission id done daily, in South India.
This is done after the Artha jama Pooja (10.30 pm), when God is sent to His bed room.
For those who are unaware of Hinduism’s treatment (!) of God as one of us, this might sound strange.
The Poojas are performed , the od and the goddess are led into their Bed room (பள்ளியறை) , after offering them boiled Cow’s Milk.( it will be distributed to the devotees, it will taste heavenly(அரவணைப்பால்)
i shall post on this Bed room aspect separately.
( seem to be committing for a lot of posts, hope I remember to write).
As soon as God enters the bed room, the accountant of the Temple reads out the Accounts for the day before God and seeks his approval.
Then an Arati is performed and the bed room is closed.( Arati- a practice in which some pieces of camphor is lit on a special plate and showed around God thrice to the chanting of mantras.)
This practice is being followed in Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple even to-day.
Where Siva’s Cosmic Dance Was Performed
There are five places where Lord Siva , legend has it, performed the Thandava, The Cosmic Dance.
Universe is Motion, in the ultimate analysis.
The developments in the field of Astrophysics and Astronomy will vouch for it.
The Motion is what sustains the Universe.
Please some images in this post under Images and Astrophysics to see Universe in Motion.
The Trinity of Hinduism represents the three states of Energy.
Brahma, Potential Energy,He produces as it were the Universe-Srushti,Creation, Unleashing.
Vishnu, Kinetic Energy, He sustains,Sthithi,Stability,Sustenance.
And Rudra, The Potentio-Kinetic Energy, He apparently destroys to recreate later-Samhaaram, Thirodhaanam and Anugraham,Apparent destruction, Concealment, and Grace.
Lord Siva is said to have performed Five types of The Cosmic Dance at,
Ponnambalam, Golden Assembly-Chidambaram.
Velliyambalam, Silver Assembly, Madurai,
Tamira Sabaai, Copper Assembly. Nelliappar Temple, Thirunelveli,
Chitra Sabahai,Thirukkutralam, Assembli of Arts and at
Ratna Sabahai,Thiruvavaduthurai,Assembly of Gems.-Thiruvalangadu.
The place is about 16 kms SW of Mailaduthurai, on the banks of River Cauvery. The main Raja gopuram is of five storey and three prakarams inside.
Main Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Arul Migu Gomuktheeswarar and his consort known as OPilA Ammai. Sthala vruksham is Palm tree. Teertham isGomukhi teertham.

Thruvalankadu Temple
Purana says Uma Devi worshipped Lord Siva in this place in the form of a cow. She was blessed by Lord Siva and she turned into her original form, and took her in him.
Importance: Devas and Muni’s requested Lord Siva, to bless them by performing his Siva Thandavam, in which they were interested. Lord Siva fulfilled their wish here under the Sthala Vruksham. Muni’s and Brahma got their Upadesam of Siva Gyanam in this place.
Chittars were granted Athama Siddhi.
According to Sthala Puranam, Thiru Moolar composed 3000 hymns known as“Thiru Mandiram” in this place.
Thiru Gyana sambandhar, Sundarar, and Thiru Navukkarasar sang hymns on Lord Siva of this place.
The temple is under Thiru Kailaya Thiruvavaduthurai Adeenam. The building of Adeenam is adjacent to the temple.
