Want Stolen iPhone? Contact Amazon

In crime on December 26, 2012 at 18:54

It was recently found that an iPhone that had been stolen  was sold by Amazon!

So much for reliability!

A Customer found this whenhe tried to activate the iPhone.

Story:

Ben Dreyfuss@bendreyfuss

I bought my my Mom an iPhone for Christmas off Amazon and when she tried to activate it they told her it had been stolen.

Ben had bought the phone off Amazon, one of their refurbished warehouse deals—which are usually smart buys. (Buying refurbished Apple gear is always a good call.) This time, however, it turned out to be a raw deal. Sorry, Ben’s mom; we hope you have a merry Christmas and get issue this resolved quickly—you’ve got to load up that new phone with awesome apps!

This was probably an honest mistake—Amazon is a stand-up company. We’ve reached out for comment, but, you know, it’s Christmas Day, so we’re not holding our breath. Ben has already contacted Amazon, and they said to return the thing.

How Google makes Money?

In Business, internet on January 27, 2012 at 10:13

chart showing how Google made money

How dis Google make money?

The Top 10 Industries That Spent Big On Google AdWords In 2011

  1. Finance & Insurance – $4.0 Billion (example keywords in this industry include: “self employed health insurance”, “cheap car insurance”, “credit cards for bad credit”)
  2. Retailers & General Merchandise – $2.8 Billion (example keywords in this industry include “zumba dance dvd”, “proform treadmill”, “weber grill accessories”)
  3. Travel & Tourism – $2.4 Billion (e.g. “new york hotels”, “plane tickets”, “rental car deals”)
  4. Jobs & Education – $2.2 Billion (e.g. “accredited online college degrees”, “online certificate programs”, “unemployment benefits”)
  5. Home & Garden— $2.1 Billion (e.g. “replacement windows cost”, “appliance repair”, “cabinet refacing”)
  6. Computer & Consumer Electronics – $2.0 Billion (“ink cartridges discount”, “pc memory”, “online video conferencing software”)
  7. Vehicles – $2.0 Billion (e.g “cheap hybrid cars”, “certified used cars”, “bridgestone tires”)
  8. Internet & Telecommunications – $1.7 Billion (“pre paid cell phones”, “domain registration”, “cable internet providers”)
  9. Business & Industrial – $1.6 Billion (“custom business cards”, “cheap office supplies”, “foam packing”)
  10. Occasions & Gifts – $1.2 Billion (“funeral flowers arrangements”, “flower delivery”, “wedding gift registry”)

Advertising revenues from these 10 industries accounted for 60% of Google’s 2011 revenues. The remaining $14.4 billion in advertiser revenues came from other industries. (Just 4% of Google’s revenues came from non-advertising-related sources.)

5 Things The Google Revenue Data Tells Us About The US Economy

Because everyone uses Google, and 3 million businesses advertise on Google, we can learn a lot about the state of the US economy from these results. Here are some of my conclusions.

Occupy Wall Street Was Right?

Despite the recent financial meltdown, the finance and insurance industries were the biggest spenders of the year – and rest assured, finance companies wouldn’t be spending billions on Google advertising if they weren’t turning a profit from it. Insurance and loan companies were especially keen to acquire new customers through PPC – that’s because these industries make a killing off each new client.

What Recession? Consumerism Still Rampant

Despite a weak economy and high unemployment, Americans are still splurging on vacations and buying lots and lots of stuff (and we’re willing to refinance our homes and apply for new credit cards, despite bad credit, in order to get it). Amazon alone spent over $55 million on PPC ads in 2011, and that’s just what they spent on AdWords.

High Unemployment Creates Opportunities for Education, Jobs and Training

Unemployment hovered around 9% in 2011. Lots of people took this opportunity to seek out more education, and online degree programs are reaping the benefits. The University of Phoenix spent even more on AdWords than State Farm, the biggest spender in the Finance & Insurance industry.

Home & Garden Crushes Real Estate

A housing recovery is nowhere to be seen in Google’s 2011 revenues. Americans overwhelmingly spent more on fixing up the house or apartment they already owned rather than buying up.

Businesses Are Holding Back

Business and industrial spending was soft compared to other industries and relative to its overall share of the GDP. It seems that corporations are sitting on a lot of cash right now and are slow to invest.

Overall, from what I can see, a billion people are doing a billion searches on Google every day, looking to buy stuff, financial products, or to improve their skills. So while I’m no economist, my own prediction is that the US economy will be OK in 2012.

Google’s Top Revenue Sources: Survey Methodology

I compiled these revenue estimates by using our own trillion-keyword database and the Google Keyword Tool to determine the top 10 million most popular search queries in 2011, as well as their average cost per click prices as paid by advertisers. I used WordStream PPC technologies to categorize the huge keyword list by industry, such as “Finance & Insurance,” then applied a model that weighed the relative percentages of each industry’s revenue (keyword volume * average cost per click) to Google’s 2011 revenues, excluding non-advertising revenues. The top five advertisers in each industry and their estimated spend was obtained by using data from SpyFu.com, then applying the same categorization analysis.

“Lost” Amazon Complex Found; Shapes Seen by Satellite

In Society on January 6, 2010 at 11:30

Hundreds of circles, squares, and other geometric shapes once hidden by forest hint at a previously unknown ancient society that flourished in the Amazon, a new study says.

Satellite images of the upper Amazon Basin taken since 1999 have revealed more than 200 geometric earthworks spanning a distance greater than 155 miles (250 kilometers).

Now researchers estimate that nearly ten times as many such structures—of unknown purpose—may exist undetected under the Amazon’s forest cover.

At least one of the sites has been dated to around A.D. 1283, although others may date as far back as A.D. 200 to 300, said study co-author Denise Schaan, an anthropologist at the Federal University of Pará in Belém, Brazil.

The discovery adds to evidence that the hinterlands of the Amazon once teemed with complex societies, which were largely wiped out by diseases brought to South America by European colonists in the 15th and 16th centuries, Schaan said.

Since these vanished societies had gone unrecorded, previous research had suggested that soils in the upper Amazon were too poor to support the extensive agriculture needed for such large, permanent settlements.

“We found that this picture is wrong,” Schaan said. “And there is a lot more to discover in these places.”

Wide-reaching Culture

The newfound shapes are created by a series of trenches about 36 feet (11 meters) wide and several feet deep, with adjacent banks up to 3 feet (1 meter) tall. Straight roads connect many of the earthworks.

Preliminary excavations at one of the sites in 2008 revealed that some of the earthworks were surrounded by low mounds containing domestic ceramics, charcoal, grinding-stone fragments, and other evidence of habitation.

But who built the structures and what functions they served remains a mystery. Ideas range from defensive buildings to ceremonial centers and homes, the study authors say.

Rape and Law.

In Behavior, Family on October 2, 2009 at 11:46

“How often do women falsely cry rape? Because of the 18-year-old Hofstra student who recanted after telling police that five men had tricked her into a bathroom and then gang raped her two weeks ago, that question has been flying around the Internet. As Cathy Young notes in Newsday, the answers often fall into one of two camps. “Many feminists argue that the problem of false accusations is so minuscule that to discuss it extensively is a harmful distraction from the far more serious problem of rape. On the other side are men’s-rights activists, claiming that false accusations are as much of a scourge as rape itself.”www.slate.com

http://www.slate.com/id/2231012/

It is a matter of serious concern charges of rape are increasing and also false rape charges.
Crux of the issue is defining Rape.
Legal definitions vary widely from fondling, mere obscene gesture(attempt to molest), penetration, ejaculation by male etc…
Even in the case of penetration, it can not be definitely ascertained whether it was consensual or not.A woman may change her mind after the act and declare it is not consensual with an ulterior motive.l.How do we know the Truth?
Punishment meted out,in civil societies is harsh not to speak of Fundamentalist countries.
“Legal scholars used to be routinely suspicious of rape victims. “Surely the simplest, and perhaps the most important, reason not to permit conviction for rape on the uncorroborated word of the prosecutrix is that the word is very often false,”( same article)
Being a very sensitive subject, this view is most sensible ;still better would be for men to behave like decent human beings and for women to be less provocative in matters of dress and behavior and be honest while pressing rape charges.Value system of the society in terms family and attachment shall bring in the necessary change.
